The golden hour as it is referred to in photography is the hour preceding sunset and following sunrise. These two times of day provide the best lighting conditions. The low angle of the light gives definition to objects that would otherwise be undetectable by the human eye or the camera. The long shadows create some spectacular contrasts and backdrops.
Take for example this Spider’s web. Not only does the early morning light back light the web but the morning dew droplets look like pearls strung on each strand of the web. Later in the day these water droplets would be evaporated and the web likely not even visible.
