You gaze up into the sky and watch the clouds more times than you think. Have you ever taken pictures of clouds with unique shapes, or that contrast nicely against the setting or rising sun or looked potentially menacing? You’re not alone.
I often take pictures of clouds, especially when they provide a dramatic contrast, whether angry or beautiful looking. A picture of clouds or an approaching rain cell that appears odd might turn out to be useful to investigators later. Take for example these three shots…confirmation that a funnel cloud formed even when one wasn’t expected to.
Clouds provide an important aspect of getting dramatic sunsets and sunrises. If you spend any time in the southwest where the skies are CAVU a pilot’s term for Clear Air Visibility Unlimited clouds are a rarity and when they are present the sunsets are awesome. Clouds give the sky texture and more color creating stunning moments which beg to be captured.
Don’t deny yourself from the urge to capture images of the sky and the clouds. Our images whether you shoot landscapes, aviation or wildlife are greatly improved with a few clouds to add depth and contrast. Have some fun by pointing your lens upwards and snap away. It could be a cloud that looks like a sailing ship or Mickey Mouse. A thunderstorm or cloud releasing a gentle rain. A spectacular sunset or sunrise…just enjoy being outdoors and the dramatic effect clouds offer.
